Mac media players and editors such as QuickTime and Final Cut Pro like lots and lots different file formats but not .m2t (MPEG-2 Transport Stream, commonly referred to as "HDV"), which means you can neither view M2T files in QuickTime Player, nor edit them in FCP - the Finder displays it as a generic document icon. So if you shoot an M2T video via your HD camcorder, or someone captures an HDV file in another application like Adobe Premiere and sends it to you, you will need to transcode M2T to MOV before bringing it into QuickTime or FCP.
