Canon officially announced the EOS C500 digital cinema camera on 12 April 2012. As a continuation of the concept of the C300, the notable new features of C500 compared to the previous cameras are that it can record 4K and QHD motion video capture in addition to the previous 2K and HD capture of the C300 as well as shooting raw motion video to the Motion RAW format and raw still video to Still RAW format.
The Canon EOS C500 shoots videos by MPEG-2 compression with an MXF File Wrapper using the Canon's XF Codec. MXF is a “container” format for the exchange of programme material between servers, tape streamers and to digital archives. Its contents may include a number of different streams of coded “essence”, encoded with any of variety of codecs.
