FCE - Final Cut Express is an easier Mac video editing application than Final Cut Pro, and many professionals and also beginners are using Final Cut Express to do video editing on Mac. FEC supports pretty much the same video formats as iMovie, including MOV, DV, MP4, HDV etc. MKV has become a quite common HD video format, if you want to edit MKV on Mac with FCE, you will need a Mac MKV to FEC converter, because MKV is obviously not supported by FCE.

Click the arrow to the very right of the Profile field and to left of the Settings button, and you will see the Profile down-up list. Move your mouse pointer to “HD Video”, and from the “HD Video” profiles, click on a supported format by Final Cut Express, such as MOV.
The final step: Click on the big Start button to start the conversion of MKV to FCE. By default, the folder where the converted files are saved will be opened right after the conversion. And now, you can just launch Final Cut Express, and add the converted files to start edit them. Tips: If you are converting a lot of files at one time, you may want to check the “Shut down computer after conversion” option at the conversion window.
